Over the years, the power of the internet and social media has changed (for better or worse) the way people access their favorite celebrities.
Previously, you may have only known a celebrity through their film roles, but now you can see them out and about in “real life” through their Instagram posts, or even send them a direct message on X. You might even get a response.
And thanks to a platform called Cameo, your favorite stars, including some Maine natives, will be sending you and people you know personalized videos.
What is Cameo?
According to the company's website, Cameo is a place where you can “connect with your favorite stars” and receive memorable, personalized messages from them.
Founded in 2017, Cameo really took off during the pandemic when everyone was staying at home and looking for positive messages, and these celebrities and stars were looking for sources of income while things were shut down, according to The Guardian.
No, Cameo messages aren't free. You have to pay, and E! News lists Caitlyn Jenner ($2,500 per video), Kevin Smith ($999 per video), and Ice-T ($600 per video) as some of the highest-paid members.
Which Maine celebrities are featured on Cameo?
If you were hoping to spot some of Maine's most popular celebrities, like Stephen King, Anna Kendrick or Patrick Dempsey, you're sadly out of luck.
It's not on the platform in 2024, but it may be in the future.
But five Maine-born celebrities are on Cameo, so you can get some fun messages from them.
Timothy Simons talks about cameos
The most expensive of the five is actor Timothy Simmons, known for his roles in films such as “Veep” and “Don't Worry Darling.” Simmons was born in Leadfield, Maine, and his videos can be purchased for $500.
Cameo by Erin Andrews
For just $250, you can send a fun video message from Erin Andrews. The sportscaster, who has appeared on ESPN, Fox News and competed on “Dancing With the Stars,” was born in Lewiston, Maine.
John O'Harry talks about his cameo
For just $199, “Seinfeld” fans can get a message from J. Peterman himself, actor John O'Hurry. O'Hurry was born in Kittery, Maine.
Roger Matthews, cameo
You might be surprised to know that Roger Matthews of Jersey Shore fame is actually from Maine. The reality TV star was born in Cherryfield, Maine. What about his love of the gym, tanning and lobster? His videos are available for $50.
Greg Finley talks about cameos
The cheapest of the five, at $40 a pop, is from actor Greg Finley, who has appeared in “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” and “The Flash.” Finley was born in Portland, Maine.
