Thanks to the hard work and sacrifices of their forebears, Black people are earning higher education degrees in record numbers. Notable Black people have been awarded honorary degrees in recognition of their contributions to their fields. But for generations past, earning a degree has never been easier.
In the antebellum South, most black people could not read, write, or do basic arithmetic. Over time, black people were allowed to receive an elementary education. While this was progress, higher education was not an option for most. Still, black people took matters into their own hands and founded colleges and universities, or HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities).
Thanks to the tireless efforts of their ancestors, many black people, including celebrities, have received higher education at HBCUs. Some of today's most famous and wealthy stars attended these historic universities, including Oprah Winfrey (Tennessee State University), Taraji P. Henson (Howard University), and Michael Strahan (Texas State University).
Some notable Black people have received honorary degrees, which typically recognize contributions to a field in a way that is comparable to a traditional academic degree. Here are eight notable Black people who have received honorary degrees.
