Former US President Barack Obama told allies that Joe Biden should reconsider the idea of seeking reelection, The Washington Post reported on Thursday.
The paper quoted people familiar with Obama's thinking as saying he believes Biden's path to victory has narrowed and that he should “seriously consider running for office.”
There was no immediate comment from Obama, who held the presidency while Biden served as vice president from 2009 to 2017 and remains a major influence within the Democratic Party, the newspaper said.
Obama would be the most likely Democrat yet to join growing calls within the party for Biden to withdraw after his disastrous debate performance with Donald Trump.
Biden, who is isolating at his beach house due to COVID-19, has denied concerns about his age and health and insisted he will continue to run for president.
But pressure is growing, with Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries also reportedly meeting with Biden recently and warning him that his candidacy poses a threat to the party's prospects in the November election.
