Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo has become the first US mayor to publicly call on Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential race.
“It's clear that the American people want a different candidate to lead the Democratic Party,” Mayor Victor Gordo said in an initial statement. POLITICO“Right now, the American people want and need real change, and I hope the president will rise to this moment and heed this call.”
Calls for Biden to resign have grown since his performance in last month's debate with Donald Trump.
About two dozen House Democrats, including Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Pasadena), have called on Trump to drop out of the race.
Schiff on Wednesday expressed “serious concerns” about whether Biden can defeat Republican nominee and former President Donald Trump.
“Biden has been one of the most important presidents in our nation's history, and our country is better off for his lifetime of service as a senator, vice president and now president,” Schiff told the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday.
“But our country is at a crossroads. President Trump's re-election would undermine the foundations of our democracy. I have serious concerns about whether the president can defeat Donald Trump in November,” Schiff said.
Biden has repeatedly rejected calls to resign and insists he intends to remain in the race and win in November.
While there have been concerns about Biden's age, so far no one has gone a step further and questioned his ability to lead the country.
On Wednesday, CNN reported that Nancy Pelosi also told him he can't win the November election.
It's unclear whether Vice President Kamala Harris would lead the party if Biden steps down, and Gov. Gavin Newsom's name has also been floated.
The Democratic National Convention will be held in Chicago from August 19 to 22, when the party will formally nominate its presidential candidate.
The Democratic National Committee has decided to hold a virtual roll call vote to formally nominate Biden in the first week of August, according to multiple media reports, citing a letter sent on Wednesday by the chairs of the party's convention rules committee.
