Governor Wes Moore speaks out about the presidential election
11News caught up with Gov. Wes Moore in Annapolis Thursday, hours before the former president addresses the nation at the Republican National Convention.
The former president also touched on some of the key themes he has campaigned on, spending a few minutes on border security in particular. He cited the case of Rachel Moran here in Maryland as an example of why he wants to crack down on illegal immigration. I also met with Rachel Moran's grieving mother and sister recently. Rachel was a 37-year-old mother of five beautiful children who was brutally raped and murdered while running. She wanted to keep her health. It was very important to her. She was murdered. The perpetrator had murdered another woman in El Salvador before being allowed into the United States by the White House. Rachel's mother will never be the same again. This highly anticipated speech is just one of several big headlines we have been following this week. On the other side of the aisle, President Joe Biden is still recovering from COVID, and tonight we had the opportunity to catch up with Governor Wes Moore and ask him if he is still open to Biden's reelection. We also heard his thoughts on Biden. Trump's running mate and the assassination attempt. I will continue to pray for his recovery. There is no place for political violence in our society against anyone. Not now, not ever. So I will continue to pray for his safety. Maryland Governor Wes Moore said this evening that he is interested to hear what Trump has to say in his first big speech since the assassination attempt. But I also know that I have been wanting to know for years what his vision is for the future and the country. Because I support President Biden because I have heard his vision for the next four years. This important speech came the day after Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio (whom the governor says he has known for a long time) accepted President Trump's nomination as his running mate. I pledge to all Americans, no matter what party you belong to, that I will do everything in my power to serve you, and to make this country a place where every dream you have for yourself, your family, and your country can come true. Again, I refer to the fact that Vance was critical of the former president. But now Moore says Vance is not the man he met years ago to say that J.D. Vance is in favor of a national abortion ban and against Medicare and the Affordable Care Act that supports so many people in this country. And Vice President Kamala Harris, who will face Vance in the general election, agrees. He talked about his life growing up in southwest Ohio, and it was compelling. It's a compelling story, but it's not the whole story. This all comes as President Joe Biden continues to recover from COVID. He said in an interview that he would consider resigning if he had the health conditions he needed, and the diagnosis added fuel to the fire. But tonight, Governor Moore said his COVID diagnosis doesn't change his support for the president. I not only wish him a speedy recovery, but the president is also a candidate and I'm going to support him. We also know that tonight, former President Barack Obama and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi have privately expressed concerns about President Biden's campaign. Those two are the most prominent Democrats to have made such statements.
Governor Wes Moore speaks out about the presidential election
11News caught up with Gov. Wes Moore in Annapolis Thursday, hours before the former president addresses the nation at the Republican National Convention.
After a busy week in politics, 11 News spoke with Gov. Wes Moore about the future of the presidential election. Ahead of former President Donald Trump's first speech since the assassination attempt, Governor Moore said he was praying for the Republican candidate. “Political violence has not and will never have a place in our society for anyone. I will continue to pray for his safety. I will continue to pray for his recovery,” Governor Moore said. Governor Moore said he was interested in the former president's “vision for the future of the country over the next four years.” “The reason I support President Joe Biden is because I've heard his vision for the next four years. Not only do I appreciate the partnership he's given us so far, but I look at what we've accomplished in the first 18 months of his administration and I look forward to what we can do with President Biden over the next four years,” Governor Moore told 11 News. Moore said he supports the Biden-Harris administration, even though Biden is currently infected with COVID-19. He also commented on Trump's running mate, Ohio Republican Sen. J.D. Vance. “I've known J.D. Vance for a long time, and that's why I can't support him to be vice president of this country,” Moore said. “Hearing J.D. Vance now say he's in favor of a national abortion ban, and he's against Medicare, he's against Obamacare, which supports so many people in this country. This is not the person I met years ago, so it's amazing to see him having to reintroduce himself to people who knew him before.” In his Thursday night speech, Trump paid tribute to firefighter Cory Comperatore, who died at a rally on Saturday, and unveiled a firefighter uniform onstage. “I shouldn't have been here tonight. I shouldn't have been here,” he said, as the crowd chanted, “Yeah, you guys.”
