President Joe Biden reiterated Friday that he has no plans to abandon his quest for a second term, despite growing calls from within his own party for him to drop out of the race.
Two Bay Area members of Congress, Reps. Zoe Lofgren and Jared Huffman, became the latest politicians to add their names to the list calling for Biden to withdraw.
Zofgren said the decision wasn't an easy one, but looking at the numbers, the consequences could be devastating for the country.
“It was actually a tough decision,” she said. “It took a lot of time. It was very upsetting and uncomfortable.”
Lofgren delivered the letter to the campaign on Thursday night in which she praised Biden's accomplishments but said the numbers are not currently winning.
“Time is running out,” she said.
Dr. Melinda Jackson, a political science professor at San Jose State University, wasn't surprised by Lofgren's letter.
“My judgment as a political scientist is that the outcome is clear,” Jackson said.
Biden appears to be standing his ground: In a memo obtained by NBC News, the campaign's battleground state managers said Biden is “fighting to win.”
Not all Democrats have defected from the party: Sen. Alex Padilla remains an outspoken supporter of the Biden-Harris ticket, as does Gov. Gavin Newsom.
