Seven Mississippi students are aiming to be recognized in a program that recognizes the most prominent high school seniors in the nation.
The Mississippi State Department of Education announced Tuesday that the following students have been selected as 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholar Semifinalists.
- Charles Frugé (Oxford High School)
- Omile Jamil (DeSoto Central High School)
- Noah Lee (Mississippi School of Mathematics and Science)
- Peyton Sanders (Pelahatchee Attendance Center)
- Sidney Smith (Hattiesburg High School)
- Kayla Truong (Northwest Rankin High School)
- Iris Shue (Mississippi School of Mathematics and Science)
Mississippi State's semifinalists were selected from thousands of candidates across the country. Semifinalists will form a pool of up to 161 students to be selected as 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars.
The 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars will be announced in early May. Scholars are selected based on academic and artistic success, career and technical accomplishments, leadership, and school and community involvement. These scholars represent the promise of educational excellence and the greatness of America's youth.
Founded in 1964, the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program recognizes high-achieving students across the nation by awarding honorees with prestigious awards at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC. The program was later expanded to recognize students who have demonstrated outstanding talent in the arts, career, and technical education. fields.
