“I definitely had a vision,” said Capitol City Crunch co-developer Noel Warner. “I felt like it was something I could create that I would enjoy.”
Showing pride in your city comes in many forms, but few are as unique as creating a breakfast cereal that pays homage to a specific place.
But that's exactly what Noel Warner did.
Warner and his business partners own Day and Night Exotic Cereal Bar in Springfield Town Center in Springfield, Virginia, and are expanding their business by inventing DC-themed cereals.
“I definitely had a vision,” Warner said. “I felt like it was something I could create that I would enjoy.”
This cereal is called Capitol City Crunch.
It's similar to Kix, but with vanilla and strawberry corn crisp flavors and is red and white, like the Washington, D.C., flag.
“When I was growing up and growing up, my parents worked late and hard, so cereal was my go-to at home,” Warner said.
Warner grew up in southeast D.C.
“This was a way to give back to the community,” Warner said.
The cereal box itself is designed to look like the D.C. flag and also includes a map of D.C. neighborhoods.
“We call ourselves serial entrepreneurs,” said Warner business partner Brandi Forte. “We are cereal connoisseurs and have literally studied the science and art of cereal.”
Ms. Forte is originally from California, but she has local ties to the state's capital, as she graduated from Howard University.
It took about a year for Forte and Warner's cereal idea to come to fruition.
“We started research and collaborated with some food scientists,” Forte said.
We also had to work with designers and manufacturers.
“When we create boxes, there are certain trademarks and other things that cannot be infringed,” Forte explained.
The cereal will officially hit the market in June, but it already has its own website and is available for pre-order for $40.
Cereal lovers can find Capitol City Crunch at Target, Amazon, and various local stores in the Washington, DC area.
