Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has been granted immunity from criminal prosecution for actions the president took while in office as the Supreme Court hears arguments on issues related to former President Trump. He said he doesn't think it should be done.
Asked by Kristen Welker in an interview Thursday on NBC News' “Meet the Press” whether he thought the president was immune from criminal prosecution, McConnell deferred to the Supreme Court.
“Of course I don't think so, but it's not for me to decide,” he said. “The president obviously needs some kind of immunity or he's going to be in court all the time.”
“So we'll see how the Supreme Court deals with it,” McConnell continued.
The Supreme Court on Thursday heard nearly three hours of arguments from Trump's lawyers on why he should be immune from criminal prosecution over his alleged plot to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. The trial was held.
Welker pressed McConnell to vote in favor of President Trump's 2021 comments and vote to acquit him after he was impeached by the House. At the time, he said Trump was responsible for everything he did during his time in office and that “he hasn't gotten away with anything yet.”
Mr. McConnell said he stands by his previous statements, but that the court's decision in Mr. Trump's case will still be delayed.
“We're going to know that, right? I mean, the Supreme Court is going to take up the immediate issue that I mentioned on February 13, 2021. And I think we'll find out soon,” he said. Ta.
High court judges appeared prepared to offer the commander-in-chief some protection from criminal prosecution, but were skeptical of the Trump campaign's argument that presidential immunity could extend to attempted coups. expressed a positive attitude.
The landmark case could create new legal battles and delay the lawsuits President Trump is currently facing. A decision in the case is expected by the end of June, but Special Counsel Jack Smith has asked the court to work on a faster schedule.
