- The 2024 Cannes Film Festival is being held in France.
- In the past, stars such as Meryl Streep and Greta Gerwig have worn the fashion-forward outfits.
- However, there are some celebrities who miss the mark with their outfits.
It's that time of year again. The Cannes Film Festival is currently underway in France.
This is an opportunity for movies to be screened in front of movie royalty and for beloved celebrities, young actors, models, and other stars to show off their stunning fashion on the event's red carpet.
And so far, people like Meryl Streep and Greta Gerwig have done just that.
Here's what they wore and some celebrity outfits that missed the mark.
Greta Gerwig had a high fashion moment at the Cannes Film Festival jury photo event.
She arrived wearing a blue and white striped dress from Maison Margiela's Spring/Summer 2024 collection and white tabi stilettos.
The former piece featured a pleated midi skirt, fitted waist, and thick shoulder straps decorated with squares at the top, making the dress resemble paper doll clothes.
Meryl Streep looked ready to go on a vacation in France in a sharp suit.
She attended the same photo event as Gerwig and also chose to wear blue and white stripes. But Streep made it happen by tucking her button-up blouse into pleated white high-waisted pants.
She also wore a long white blazer, silver pumps, black sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat. Michael Kors designed her costume.
Too many things happened to Jane Fonda's costumes.
She walked the Le Deuxième Acte red carpet wearing a black Elie Saab jumpsuit and leopard-print duster.
Either part could have worked well on its own. But when you put them together, too many details meshed together.
Her suit alone featured floral appliqués made of pink and black beads, and her pants were long enough to go over her metal heels.
Taylor Hill looked like a Hollywood star in black and white.
Her off-the-shoulder dress had black sparkles on the sweetheart neckline, large crystal buttons on the body-hugging bodice, and a white skirt with a thigh-high slit.
The latter piece also extended into a short train that echoed the rounded style of her diamond choker necklace.
Hill perfected the habit. balmain Complete the look with black sandals, a pixie haircut, diamond jewelry, and smoky makeup.
Influencer Rahi Chadha perfected his menswear look on the Le Deuxième Acte red carpet.
He arrived at the first Cannes screening of 2024 wearing a sheer blouse with a thin train, black pants and a white blazer.
But his outfit didn't stop there. He also added sparkling dress shoes, sparkling makeup, and a diamond necklace with an aquamarine pendant.
German star Wilma Els wore a turquoise dress with confusing gold parts.
The base layer of her strapless gown was full of intricate details. The corset top was sheer and embellished with braided cups, and the floor-length skirt had a hip slit and fabric draped over the thighs.
But on top of that bold look sat a golden corset adorned with metallic roses.
While the outfits were futuristic and different, they were a little too busy for a glitzy red carpet.
Heidi Klum's red dress was cute, but too simple.
Saiid Kobeisy's dress was made from voluminous red satin. It featured a wrapped bodice, off-the-shoulder sleeves, and a bubble skirt that flowed behind Klum in thick layers.
The overall design was great and made the supermodel look like a princess. However, the look could have been even better with a few adjustments.
Bigger diamond jewelry could have added some much-needed sparkle, and stiletto sandals would have fit the dress better than pumps. It might have been nice to see Klum wear the dress with different styles of straps, similar to what she sees on designer runways.
Naomi Campbell stunned at a screening of Furiosa: The Mad Max Saga on Wednesday.
Styled by Law Roach, Campbell wore a semi-sheer Chanel dress from 1997. The dress had pearl straps, a square bodice covered in black sequins, and a mesh skirt lined with thick stripes of the same sparkle.
She paired her dazzling dress with pointy pumps and long diamond earrings.
Sabrina Doerr Elba's dress had potential, but missed the mark.
She wore an asymmetrical Fendi dress that was white at the top, darker in shades of gray and black at the bottom, and covered in delicate crystals. It also had one sleeve that extended to her floor.
The backless design and more pronounced ombré effect made it look unique and bold from the back, but underwhelming from the front.
Iris Mittenaire's black dress with 3D embellishments was truly unique.
The former Miss Universe winner wore a black bodysuit under a long-sleeved gown.
The latter piece was made of mesh and had a floor-length skirt, with a high slit that revealed Mittenaire's black pumps.
However, various golden embellishments on the chest, back, and sleeves made the garment particularly bold, making it look like a wearable piece of art.
Model Arione Badala Fall demonstrated the power of strong tailoring.
He walked the red carpet for Furiosa in an eggshell-shaded silk suit.
Its color was unique, its shiny material had a classy feel, and its construction set it apart from other classic suits with wide-leg pants and a fitted blazer at the waist.
Chris Hemsworth should have taken a fashion risk.
After a disappointing showing at the Met Gala, Hemsworth took the opportunity to wear something particularly fun at Cannes.
But instead, he decided to wear another simple suit. His outfit included black pants, shiny dress shoes, and a cream-colored blazer over a white top.
Of course, Hemsworth looks great in whatever he wears. But not experimenting with new styles on the French red carpet feels like a missed opportunity.
