MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A business owner is trying to recover after a food truck was robbed late Friday night.
Now, after years of building a business to provide Memphians with dining options, he has to start from scratch.
Keedran Franklin is the owner of the Pizza Dis Pizza Dat food truck.
He said he was not only angry but sad when he got into the food truck and saw almost everything was gone.
“When I walk to my truck and open it up, I just feel terrible. They took everything. Almost everything,” Franklin said.
Franklin said the Pizza This Pasta Dat food truck, which was parked behind Growlers in Midtown, was broken into and several items taken.
“When I got to the back door, I smelled smoke and saw a pot being unloaded from a truck that looked like a mixing bowl,” he said.
He said all of this happened shortly after he secured a one-year residency position with the food truck at Overton Park Shell.
He said his influence in Memphis' community and culture has led to such opportunities, but all of that is now on pause.
“This theft kind of put a stop to loving what we do,” Franklin said.
The Memphis Shelby Crime Commission reports property crimes increased by more than 15% in 2023.
Franklin is frustrated that his food truck was broken into and his items stolen, but he says the problem is deeper.
“On the one hand, I'm angry. On the other hand, I'm sad because everyone should have enough in energy, time, buildings, and places where no one needs to be invaded,” he said. Ta.
Now, he's even more hopeful about Memphis' economic future.
“My hope is that ultimately we can get things right economically and at least get things right for everyone,” he said. “We don't have to think about these petty thefts and break-ins here.”
A Go Fund Me was created by the director of the Overton Park Shell to help get all the items back into the food truck.
