Residents living in the encampment in San Rafael say they are having trouble sleeping because they fear they could hear loud music coming from the store next door.
“It's been going on for the last four days,” Anker Aderen said.
Aderen lives in a homeless camp next to East Bay Tire on Lincoln Avenue near Second Street. The music itself may be great, but blaring on loop all night isn't.
“They say they can't sleep,” Aderen said. “It's a little worrying considering no one knew about it.”
NBC Bay Area reached out to East Bay Tire for a statement but did not receive a comment.
East Bay Tire has been there for decades, and the encampment behind the fence has been there for months already. NBC Bay Area asked the president of the Marin County Homeless Union what led to the escalation.
“I think what the property owners are trying to promote right now is emboldened by the city of San Rafael's hostility to the integrity of the camp,” President Robbie Powelson said. He is “trying to further the city's mission to evict everyone.”
Powelson said the city is seeking to lift a preliminary injunction that prevents the camp from disbanding. NBC Bay Area had difficulty communicating with the city.
Lawyers for the camp are scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday to seek an injunction against increased nighttime noise.
