Rudy Giuliani and 10 others pleaded not guilty Tuesday in an Arizona court to charges of conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
The former New York City mayor was also ordered held on $10,000 bail last week for evading the state's efforts to subpoena him.
Giuliani attended an 80th birthday celebration hosted by Republican operatives in Palm Beach, Florida, on Friday. Arizona prosecutors spent weeks tracking Giuliani and eventually located him based on some of his podcasts.
An Arizona grand jury last month indicted more than a dozen supporters of Donald Trump for trying to overturn his 2020 election loss, including false electors and several people associated with the Trump campaign. It was decided that this included.
In addition to Giuliani, 10 other defendants also entered not guilty pleas on Tuesday, four of whom appeared virtually and six in person. The list includes Trump ally Christina Bobb, who is now the Republican National Committee's top election integrity lawyer; former Trump campaign aide Mike Roman; and former Arizona Republican Party Chair Kelli Ward.
Former Trump lawyer John Eastman pleaded not guilty last week.
Six others are expected to attend next month, including former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, former Trump adviser Boris Epshteyn and former Trump campaign lawyer Jenna Ellis.
Trump is not among those indicted in Arizona, but details in the indictment suggest he is “unindicted co-conspirator 1.”
Prosecutor Nicholas Clingerman asked Giuliani to report to Arizona within a month for proceedings and asked for $10,000 cash bail, telling the judge that Giuliani “did not commit this crime. “They were not cooperative with the process and did not communicate with us.”
“At the time, there were two agents in Florida working for Mr. Giuliani, sitting outside the party and waiting to see if he was going to leave,” Klingerman said of Mr. Giuliani's birthday party. .
That night, Giuliani tweeted that the charges would have to be dropped “if Arizona authorities can't find me by tomorrow morning.” An hour after the post, officers saw him leaving the party and responded, Klingerman said.
“I'm not hiding from anybody,” Giuliani told the judge during Tuesday's hearing.
“I've received quite a few threats…Now that I'm bankrupt, I'm not safe anymore. So I have very specific rules,” Giuliani said, adding that in this apartment in New York, agents provide services. I explained why I couldn't do it.
Giuliani claimed that there were attempted assaults on him in France and the Netherlands, and said the cash bond “would be purely punitive.”
“I consider this indictment to be a complete disgrace to the American legal system. But I have shown no disobedience,” Giuliani said, adding, “I think this indictment is a complete disgrace to the American legal system. “Let's see what we can do to destroy Donald Trump!” has been called out many times by the movement. ”
Giuliani told the judge he didn't have a lawyer and claimed he could handle the arraignment himself “aside from the fact that I don't have a copy of the indictment,” and the judge reminded him that he could handle the arraignment himself. I offered to give them my email address before pressing the button. He was appearing in open court.
“Yeah,” Giuliani said.
