AUGUSTA, Maine — The former incoming president of the University of Maine at Augusta, who resigned in 2022 following faculty complaints, will still receive about $20,000 a month from the state university system.
Under the terms of the settlement, Michael Laliberte had collected $372,083 from the University of Maine System as of April 24 without working a day, the Kennebec Journal reported.
Laliberté was scheduled to become UMA president after news of the no-confidence vote surfaced while he was president of the State University of New York at Delhi. This led to a vote of no confidence in Laliberté after UMS Chancellor Dannel Malloy acknowledged that he was aware of Laliberté's vote of no confidence but refused to share the information with the investigative committee. Laliberté ultimately chose to resign.
Laliberte received a lump sum of $235,000 in June 2022, plus $20,000 in monthly payments if he can't find a comparable job and can provide evidence that he's searching for work. University officials said documents about Laliberte's efforts to secure a job are not public records and are available to the newspaper.
Malloy overcame a no-confidence vote this week to win a two-year contract extension. University officials hired Jennifer Cushman as president of the Augusta campus in May 2023.
