The former incoming president of the University of Maine at Augusta, who resigned in 2022 following faculty complaints, still receives about $20,000 a month.
AUGUSTA, Maine — The former next president of the University of Maine at Augusta, who stepped down in 2022 following complaints from faculty, is still collecting about $20,000 a month from the state university system.
Under the terms of the settlement, Michael Laliberte had collected $372,083 from the University of Maine System as of April 24 without working a day, the Kennebec Journal reported.
Laliberte was scheduled to become president of UMS after news of the no-confidence vote surfaced while he was president of the State University of New York at Delhi. UMS President Dannel Malloy acknowledged that he was aware of Laliberte's no-confidence vote, but he refused to share the information with the search committee, leading to the no-confidence vote.
Laliberté ultimately chose to resign.
Mr. Laliberté received a one-time payment of $235,000 in June 2022. He will also receive a monthly stipend of $20,000 if he can provide evidence that he is looking for work because he cannot find a comparable job. University officials said documents regarding Mr. Laliberté's efforts to secure his job were not public records and could be viewed by newspapers.
Malloy overcame a vote of no confidence this week to win a two-year contract extension. University officials have hired Jennifer Cushman to become president of the Augusta campus in May 2023.
This story has been corrected to show that the current UMA president's name is Jennifer, not Jennifer Cushman.
