Protests on US campuses on the rise, university presidents say: Live updates

Northwestern University President Michael Schill, Rutgers University President Jonathan Holloway and UCLA's Dr. Gene Block have appeared before the House Education Committee and Workforce hearings to address anti-Semitism on college campuses.

Campus-wide student suspensionsAt Northwestern University, no students have been suspended or expelled as the university investigates allegations of anti-Semitism. At Rutgers University, four students have been suspended and 19 have been disciplined as the investigation is ongoing. At UCLA, fewer students have been disciplined as over 100 investigations are still ongoing.

A heated exchange between Republicans and Sill: Schill endured much of the questioning this morning. When pressed about comments that Republican Rep. Tim Walberg described as anti-Semitic, Schill repeatedly refused to discuss specific staff or students. Schill said the university is forming a task force of faculty and administrators who are “committed to fighting anti-Semitism and who are as committed as I am to fighting anti-Semitism.”

Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik criticized Schill over the alleged mistreatment of Jewish students at Northwestern's campus.

Republican Rep. Jim Banks of Indiana also called Sill's testimony “shameful.”

Police were not called: Sill told the committee that it was not possible to deploy police to quell protests on campus as security would not be guaranteed.
