Governor DeWine called on lawmakers to act this week, but Ohio House Majority Leader Richardson said lawmakers have no intention of passing a bill to address the issue.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Gov. Mike DeWine is talking about the 2024 presidential election and how state officials are struggling to get President Joe Biden on Ohio ballots.
Discussions are underway with state lawmakers about how to fix the fact that the Democratic National Convention, where Biden will be formally nominated, will pass Ohio's voting deadline on Aug. 7. The convention will be held in Chicago from Aug. 19-22.
Since Ohio changed its certification deadline from 60 days before the general election to 90 days before, the state Legislature has had to adjust the requirements twice to accommodate candidates from both parties, in 2012 and 2020. Each change was only temporary.
DeWine called on lawmakers to act this week, but the Ohio House majority leader said he has no intention of passing legislation to fix the problem.
Democrats appear to have only two options: hold a national convention before state certification deadlines or file a lawsuit.
With time and options running short on a solution, House Minority Leader Alison Russo continues to say Biden will be on the ballot.
The Biden campaign has previously said it doesn't expect the glitch to remove Biden from the ballot.
Mr. Trump won Ohio on his way to the White House in 2016 and won the state again in 2020, but lost to Mr. Biden and lost to Mr. Richard Nixon over John F. Kennedy in 1960. He became the first defeated presidential candidate supported by the state of Ohio.
