The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has landed a new enrollment commitment from a five-star academically-charged recruit who will enroll as a Husker in the fall.
Lincoln East High School senior Shrey Agarwal celebrated winning the University of Nebraska Presidential Scholarship on May 17 with his parents, Lalit and Sarika, his brother Arnav, school principal Casey Freese, University of Nebraska Interim President Chris Kaborek and Lincoln Trustee and Spartan alumnus Tim Clare.
Schrey scored a 35 on the ACT and 1,570 on the SAT, qualifying him for the Presidential Scholars Program, a new scholarship announced by Gov. Jim Pillen and university leaders earlier this year. The scholarship covers full tuition and an annual stipend for undergraduate students in the NU system.
Schley, who was considering offers from other universities, including Carnegie Mellon University and Georgia Institute of Technology, said the Presidential Scholarship “was a big part of my decision” because it allowed him to focus fully on his classes. Schley will study mechanical engineering and mathematics at the University of Newfoundland's Jeffrey S. Lakes School of Computer Science and Management. He joins the inaugural class of more than a dozen Presidential Scholars.
Shurey's father, Lalit, a Husker alumnus and former UNL employee, said the scholarship is paying off.
“Students like Schley are a perfect example of why the Presidential Scholars Program is so important to our state,” Kaborek said. “Schley is a fantastic young man from a great family who will achieve great things in the future. He is truly the kind of homegrown talent we cannot afford to miss out on. I am thrilled to have kept Schley at Nebraska and it was an honor to personally celebrate with him and his family. I can't wait to welcome him to campus this fall.”
During high school, Schley served as president of the Society of Future Business Leaders of America, participated in the Computer Science Honor Society, played tennis and cello in the orchestra. He was recently named to the Omaha World-Herald's 2024 All-Eastern Academic Team.
“I am pleased that another Presidential Scholar, Shrey Agarwal, will be attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,” said Chancellor Rodney D. Bennett. “Nebraska wins when an in-state scholar chooses to stay home.”
“As a member of the Jeffrey S. Lakes School of Computer Science and Management, Schlee will have the opportunity to learn alongside some of the region's most talented students and develop into one of tomorrow's innovators. We look forward to welcoming all of our new Presidential Scholars to campus this fall.”
The Presidential Scholars Program awards Nebraska students who earn a perfect score of 36 on the ACT or the equivalent SAT score of 1,570 or higher a full tuition scholarship, including tuition, fees, books, housing and all other expenses, plus a $5,000 annual stipend that can be used toward undergraduate study at any University of Nebraska campus.
The program's goal is to further Governor Jim Pillen and the University's shared vision of making Nebraska a more competitive college for the state's best and brightest young people. The University's goal is to raise the private funding necessary to expand the program to include Nebraska students who score 33 or higher on the ACT.
