I have seen this movie before.
In 1968, President Lyndon Johnson faced protests over America's involvement in the Vietnam War. Senator Eugene McCarthy faced off against Johnson in the New Hampshire primary and won more than 41% of the vote. Encouraged by this show of public discontent, Robert F. Kennedy entered the race. Amid growing opposition from within his own party, Johnson withdrew from the race.
Kennedy, who seemed certain to win the nomination, was assassinated and Johnson's vice president, Hubert Humphrey, was selected.
Despite Humphrey's staunchly liberal background, McCarthy and Kennedy supporters sat out the election, which Richard Nixon won by a narrow margin.
How many people skipped the polls in 2016 because they couldn't vote for Hillary Clinton?
2024 is not the year to pass up the election because neither candidate is the ideal choice for voters. As the saying goes, “Don't let the pursuit of the perfect be the enemy of the good.”
