PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Sabika Jewelry, which was founded in Pittsburgh 23 years ago and sold 95 percent of its jewelry through direct sales at home parties and had more than 5,300 salespeople in all 50 states, is closing its doors.
Founder Karin Marr started the company in partnership with an Austrian jeweler, and the jewelry is handcrafted. Now run by Marr's daughters, KDKA-TV's Christine Sorensen spoke with CEO Alexandra Marr Grassick, who said there were a number of business reasons that led to this difficult decision.
“This is a true blessing for me and my family, and we're so grateful to Pittsburgh for helping us start this adventure back in 2001,” said Merle Grassick. “We hope everyone will come and celebrate with us over the next few weeks, and that all the pieces here find their place and shine.”
She and her family are especially proud of the fact that they have made a total of more than $44 million in commissions to the women who have sold their jewelry. On Sabika's website, all Sabika Jewelry items are currently half off, with fans of the jewelry line jumping on the bargains.
“People love it, they're enjoying it. I think this is my last chance to get my hands on my precious Sabika, I really do,” Mer Grasic said, his voice choking with emotion.
Sabica will be hosting a special open house at Robinson's offices on June 5th, where they will be selling everything from collectibles, original prototypes and vault items.
