Robert F. Kennedy Jr. lost the Libertarian Party's first round of presidential nomination voting on Sunday, just two days after speaking at the party's convention.
According to CNN, RFK Jr. received just 19 delegates and 2.07% of the vote.
After his loss, he urged Libertarians to still vote for him in November's general election, despite the fact that “we may not agree on every downstream issue.”
Donald Trump was also briefly considered a contender as he desperately pleaded for the nomination on Saturday, but the former president was disqualified after failing to submit his nomination papers.
He defended the decision in a defiant post on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Sunday night.
“The reason I did not file the Libertarian Party nomination papers is because, although I absolutely would have been the nominee if I had wanted to (as you could see by the enthusiasm of the crowd last night), as the Republican nominee I am not allowed to accept the nomination of another party,” he wrote.
“Either way, I believe I can get a majority of the Libertarian vote. Kennedy Jr. is a Radical Left Democrat who destroyed everything he touched, especially in New York and New England, especially on the cost and practicality of energy. He is not a Libertarian. Only a fool would vote for him!”
Trump was booed loudly when he spoke at the event and received just six open ballots.
Nicole Shanahan, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s running mate, had been scheduled to speak at the event on Sunday but will not be taking the stage following her loss as vice presidential candidate.
