STORY: Mexican voters head to the polls for the June 2 general election.
They elect all members of the House of Representatives and the Senate, as well as a new president for a six-year term.
Claudia Scheinbaum is the leading candidate.
If she wins, she will become the country's first female president.
Here's what you need to know about her.
:: Who is Claudia Scheinbaum?
Sheinbaum, 60, is a trained physicist and former mayor of Mexico City.
She is a staunch ally of the current leftist President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and a member of the ruling MORENA party.
She has been a strong supporter of the president's social welfare programs and has helped build his power base and address inequality across the country.
She has run a careful campaign, careful not to criticize her mentor, Lopez Obrador, from whom she drew much of her electoral support.
Current polls place her at about 49% of the vote.
:: Her Policy
She didn't give many details about the government's plans…
Analysts say she faces a delicate balance between her own policy goals and preserving Lopez Obrador's legacy.
Scheinbaum has indicated that several senior officials will likely remain in their current positions when he takes office.
She, however, denied speculation that she had a “red phone” to take instructions from the former president, saying: “I am the one who governs.”
She promised to focus on water management and renewable energy as part of plans to make the country more sustainable.
Supporters say she will also take different positions from her successor on key issues such as corruption and security.
