TEHRAN – Constitutional Council spokesman Hadi Tahan Nazih on Saturday announced the approval of amendments to the presidential election law and measures to increase transparency in the separation of powers.
Addressing a press conference, Tahan Nazif expressed condolences over the martyrdom of the late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and said the council considered 12 drafts and bills, as well as 11 questions.
In light of identity verification procedures for the presidential elections scheduled for late June, Tahan Nazif said, “In the upcoming elections, identity verification will be carried out using both national ID cards and birth certificates.” He stressed that amendments to articles 19 and 22 of the Presidential Election Law had been considered and found to be in accordance with both Sharia law and the constitution.
Iranian Origin and Nationality: Key Criteria for Presidential Candidates
In response to a question about the eligibility criteria for presidential candidates, Tahan Nazih referred to Article 115 of the Constitution and Article 35 of the Presidential Election Law, explaining, “Iranian origin and Iranian nationality are stipulated by law as mandatory conditions for registering for the presidential election. Naturally, anyone who meets these two criteria can register as a candidate.”
