Artificial intelligence (AI) took center stage during a recent conversation between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and tech tycoon Bill Gates, with both leaders offering insightful views on the emerging technology.
PM Modi said it was important not to treat AI as a “magic tool”. He warned that using AI as a shortcut out of laziness could lead to grave injustice. The PM stressed the need for a balanced approach and suggested there should be a spirit of healthy competition with AI rather than complacency.
“We should compete with ChatGPT and strive to surpass AI,” Modi said. Bill Gates echoed similar sentiments, acknowledging the transformative power of AI but also its limitations. Gates emphasized the dynamic nature of AI.

During his meeting with Gates, the Prime Minister said: “Historically, during the first and second industrial revolutions, we lagged behind because we were a colony. We are now in the midst of the fourth industrial revolution, and digital is at its core.”
“I am sure India will gain a lot from this,” PM Modi said. “AI is very important. Sometimes I jokingly say that in our country we call our mothers 'Ai'. Now, when children are born, they will not only say AI but also 'Ai' because they have advanced so much,” PM Modi said.
