ABILENE, Kan. (WIBW) – Local, state and federal leaders gathered today at the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings.
President Dwight Eisenhower served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces in Europe during the war.
“To be able to do this here, not only in Eisenhower's hometown but also where he chose to be buried, where his museum and library are located, is the perfect location for us and we are honored to pay tribute to our World War II veterans today,” said Meredith Sleichter, executive director of the Eisenhower Foundation.
“They're here for the 21 World War II veterans who are with us today, and I want them to know, and maybe everyone else to know, that they have not been forgotten, and their service to their country has not been forgotten,” said Gov. Laura Kelly.
During the ceremony, 21 World War II veterans were presented with wreaths and certificates of honor.
“I hope they take this opportunity to meet with their family, friends and neighbors, to tell their grandchildren and tell them about their service. Our country needs role models,” said Sen. Jerry Moran.
Maj. Gen. Paul Stanton said he was excited when he got the call to come to Abilene and tour Eisenhower's birthplace.
“When these soldiers boarded their planes, gliders and surface craft, they really didn't think they would survive that day, and yet they did. And it chills me to even say it out loud because their courage is so inspiring and we should all be in awe of them,” said Stanton, Fort Eisenhower's commanding general.
Moran announced that $17.5 million from the last budget proposal would be used to restore and create new exhibits at the Eisenhower Presidential Library.
“Presidential libraries need very little, much less, to maintain their buildings and make sure they are accessible, attractive and have appropriate exhibits for visitors,” Moran said.
Sleichter said he's also been impressed with the support he's received from outside Kansas.
