WATERLOO, Iowa (KWWL) – Rep. Ashley Hinson, Iowa's 2nd District, said if his name hadn't been “Trump,” the former president would never have been charged in the case, which resulted in his conviction on 34 felony counts.
“I don't think it's right to prosecute a political opponent. I think the Department of Justice is being used as a weapon against the American people and against President Trump. I don't think any of these charges would have been brought if he hadn't run for office,” the two-term Republican said during an appearance on the Steele Report this week.
The congressman said accountability is important and that no one should be above the law, but in this case he said, “The only thing President Trump was guilty of was being named Donald Trump. This was a political maneuver.”
“There was a district attorney who campaigned to get him removed. The judge in this case actually donated to (Trump's) political opponents and anti-Republican groups. Iowans know what this is about. I think the real verdict will be in November.”
Hinson said he would support Donald Trump despite his conviction: “He's our nominee and I support him 100 percent.”
Hinson opposes the border executive order signed by President Biden earlier this week, which would allow 2,500 migrants into the U.S. each day under asylum procedures.
“If you do the math, that comes to $1.8 million a year. This administration is weaponizing domestic asylum,” Hinson said.
