Bengaluru: Two days after the arrest of Sandalwood star Darshan and his entourage, several in the film industry reacted to the irony of a celebrity who can influence people going astray, while several others stopped short of blanket condemnation. Bollywood director Ram Gopal Varma, speaking on X, said, “That a star would use one enthusiast to kill another enthusiast who interferes in his personal life is a perfect example of the strangeness of star worship syndrome. It is an inevitable side-effect of the same syndrome that fans want to dictate the life of a star. Filmmakers are supposed to start shooting only after the script is completed, but in many cases, makers write the script even while shooting, but in Darshan's murder case, the script started being written after the film was released.” Actress and former MP Ramya aka Divya Spandana reposted the comment, demanding justice for Renukaswamy and life imprisonment for Darshan. Divya posted, “Karnataka police” with a salute emoji. Asked for his opinion on the incident, director Indrajit Lankesh said, “Police have started an investigation. It would not be appropriate for me to comment on the matter.”
“No one is above the law”Former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said, “No one has the authority to inhumanely be it a powerful or a celebrity.” Actor-turned-politician Nikhil Kumarswamy said, “An investigation has been launched… We will act only after seeing the results of the investigation. Whoever is in public, people are watching us… Whether you are an actor or a politician, you have to tread carefully. This is something that can be said for anyone and what I realise.” Leader of Opposition R Ashoka said, “Darshan could have filed a complaint with the police and warned Renukaswami against his actions. But he was wrong to take law into his own hands. No one is above the law.” Veteran actor and MLC Umashree said, “Discipline has to be maintained. The discipline that applies in professional life is different from the discipline that applies in personal life. There is also a need to ensure that there are no allegations.
