(US Media Group) With President Joe Biden's advanced age and speculation over the possibility of a second term, many are focusing on Vice President Kamala Harris and whether she's up to taking on the role of commander in chief. But a recent poll found that a majority of voters don't believe Harris can win the election as the Democratic nominee.
Only a third of voters believe Harris could win as the Democratic presidential nominee, according to a Politico/Morning Consult poll released June 12. Though Harris has previously said she'd be open to the presidency “if necessary,” citing Biden's age, the poll casts doubt on her chances of success as a candidate.
The survey, which asked registered voters their opinions of the Democratic candidate, found that 14% think it's likely, 20% think it's somewhat likely, that Harris will become president, while 37% say there's no chance she could win the election.
Interestingly, the poll also found that 21% of voters would prefer Harris to be the Democratic nominee if Biden doesn't run, putting her ahead of other candidates. Only 10% of voters would prefer California Governor Gavin Newsom or former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg. However, over 40% of voters were unsure or indifferent about which candidate they would support.
The poll's findings signal a larger problem within the Democratic Party, with POLITICO reporting that 42% of voters have a very unfavorable impression of both Harris and Biden — a potentially troubling issue in upcoming elections for Democrats looking to secure a victory and maintain control of the White House.
As speculation continues to swirl about Biden's age and Harris's readiness, it remains to be seen whether the vice president can ultimately overcome the doubts and secure victory for the Democratic nominee. Until then, attention will be focused on the potential nominees and their ability to move the country forward.
