TEHRAN – The commander of Iran's Border Guard said his forces had successfully thwarted a terrorist plot to disrupt presidential elections scheduled for June 28.
As a result of the operation, the terrorists fled the country and a large amount of ammunition was seized.
Brigadier General Ahmad Ali Gudarji, in a statement on Saturday, detailed the counter-terrorism operations carried out in the southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan province, close to the Pakistan border.
The operation highlighted stepped-up security measures as the country prepares for crucial elections.
General Goudarji explained that the terrorist group had attempted to enter Iran through Saravan province, known for its difficult terrain and vulnerable borders, but thanks to the vigilance and surveillance capabilities of the Iranian Border Guards, the militants were quickly identified and thwarted.
The intense firefight wounded several militants and ultimately forced them to abandon the mission and retreat across the border. The general praised the bravery and quick response of the border guards, who were crucial in neutralizing the threat.
The operation also resulted in the seizure of a large amount of weapons and explosives. Items seized included C-4 high-velocity explosives, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), electronic fuses, AK-47 rifle ammunition, American-made grenades and advanced radio communication systems. This arsenal highlights the seriousness of the threat and the readiness of the terrorist group to carry out significant acts of violence.
Brigadier General Goudarji stressed that Iran's border guards remain resolute in protecting the country from terrorist activities. He assured that any group attempting to cross Iran's borders to carry out sabotage or terrorist acts will face firm and strong resistance.
The success of this operation will demonstrate the capabilities and readiness of Iran's Border Guards at a crucial political juncture in Iran.
Iran is set to hold a presidential election on June 28. It will be the country's 14th presidential election since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
