U.S. Department of Defense
During a ceremony at the Pentagon today, Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks and Performance Improvement Officer and Director for Management Jennifer C. Walsh recognized the Department of Defense's 2023 Presidential Rank Award recipients.
The Presidential Recognition Award (PRA) is one of the highest awards given by the President of the United States, established by statute, to career senior executives and senior professionals. Nominees undergo a lengthy and rigorous evaluation period that focuses on individuals who have made enduring, significant contributions to their agency, including delivering mission-critical solutions, providing superior customer service, and being good stewards of taxpayer money. It also includes an extensive on-site evaluation and analysis process. Nomination alone is recognition of sustained, exemplary performance over multiple years.
“Every year, despite numerous obstacles, this year's award recipients have exceeded expectations and achieved critical national security priorities,” said Deputy Secretary of Defense Hicks. “They led teams with purpose, brought out the best in their teammates, and broke down organizational barriers and inertia to expand the Department of Defense's capability and effectiveness.”
The PRA has two categories: the “Distinguished” rank, given to leaders who have achieved sustained exceptional performance, and the “Meritorious” rank, given to leaders who have achieved sustained performance.
In 2023, 15 DoD employees received the award, selected from among the most outstanding career executives and senior professional achievers across federal agencies.
