Ashanti and Nelly The world believed in love again when they rekindled their romance after a decade hiatus. This hip-hop couple was one of the fan-favorite duos during their heyday in the 2000s. The couple was together from 2003 to 2013, and reunited in 2021 to rehash their story.
However, the couple not only repaired their relationship, they also fell pregnant, announced the news in December 2023, and subsequently got engaged, which they confirmed in April 2024.
Ashanti, who will soon be welcoming the couple's first child and Nelly's fifth, opened up about their love story and revealed how the “Hot in Here” singer proposed to her.
There are many ways to propose marriage. Some are literal and spectacular, with drones and professional photographers, while others are intimate and private. Nelly chose the latter.
According to Ashanti, she was completely surprised when he proposed to her. Though she had a hunch that a proposal might be coming soon, she didn't expect it to happen while she was wearing his T-shirt and boxer shorts while watching TV. “It was such a beautiful and intimate moment,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “We weren't even dressed up.”
For Ashanti, it was an easy answer. She cried and hugged him. “I gave him the biggest hug and kiss I've ever had,” she recalled. “I FaceTimed everyone I knew… I was so happy, shocked, surprised, happy, it was all wrapped up in one.”
It was so sweet that Nelly made it intimate and personal — it would have been so easy to make it a viral video, but he wanted to keep that special moment something only the two of them could experience.
Ashanti also confirmed that she will have a baby before she gets married, and that she wants to have the wedding on a sunny beach surrounded by palm trees.
