The city of Ontario is offering commercial rental space in the city centre for $1 a month in an effort to attract more business owners and revitalise the area.
The Downtown Ontario Retail Pop-Up Program is accepting applications through next week for a limited-time offer that also includes a free lease and Wi-Fi hotspot. Approved business owners can access the service and lease for $1 per month for up to six months.
“We own these buildings and are fortunate to be able to offer rent of $1 a month to help offset costs and lower the barrier to entry,” said Peter Pallesen, economic development coordinator for the City of Ontario.
The program launched last year and helped two entrepreneurs open their own stores downtown, and now the city is hoping to fill the vacant spaces with new businesses by the end of the year. Those spaces are located at Euclid Avenue and B Street at 137 N. Euclid Avenue, 141 N. Euclid Avenue and 129 N. Euclid Avenue.
“When I saw it, I thought it was fake. I thought it couldn't be, it was a scam,” said Steven Alcarez, co-owner of Street Culture Boutique.
The program helped Alvarez open his store about six months ago, and he said the low rent allowed him to focus on growing his business and marketing his products to attract customers.
“Ontario is like downtown Los Angeles. It's very vibrant, it has a great nightlife and I think it has great potential,” Alvarez said.
Business owners interested in renting one of the properties available in the program have until Monday, June 24 to submit their application.
Applicants must apply for all required permits, provide proof of general liability insurance, pay a deposit of $1 per square foot and sign a liability waiver and entry permit.
