As the November 2024 presidential election approaches, the presumptive Democratic and Republican nominees, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, have agreed to participate in two nationally televised debates.
Here's the schedule and how to watch:
When is the presidential debate?
The first presidential debate will take place on Thursday, June 27th at 9pm ET from CNN's Atlanta studios.
How to watch the presidential debates
The first debate will be broadcast live on CNN, CNN International, CNN en Español and CNN Max. Those without cable television can watch the debate via live streaming on CNN.com, as well as on other broadcast and cable news networks across the United States.
Who will moderate the debate?
The debate will be moderated by CNN anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, according to a statement from CNN's press room.
Bash is CNN's chief political correspondent and anchor of the weekday political talk show “Inside Politics.” Tapper is CNN's principal anchor, chief Washington correspondent and host of the news show “The Read with Jake Tapper.”
What are the rules of the debate?
For the first time, the two sides have agreed to some new rules for the 90-minute debate, according to CNN.
New features include no studio audience, no interaction with election staff, no use of notes and no interruptions.
Microphones will be muted except when candidates are speaking, and the network said the hosts will “take every measure to ensure punctuality and a civil debate.”
How to improve the quality of a discussion forum
To compete in the CNN debate, contestants must file a formal statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission.
So have Biden, Trump, and minor-party candidates Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Cornel West and Jill Stein.
According to the network, all participating debaters must appear on the ballot in enough states to reach the 270 electoral vote threshold needed to win the presidential election and receive at least 15% support in four separate national polls of registered or likely voters who meet CNN's coverage criteria.
Biden and Trump are the only two candidates who have met that standard, while Kennedy missed the midnight deadline to qualify on June 20.
