Former US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he has chosen his running mate for November's US presidential election but has not yet told anyone.
Asked by a reporter in Philadelphia on Saturday if he had chosen his running mate, Trump said, “In my heart, yes.” Asked if anyone knew his choice, he said, “No, nobody knows.”
Trump visited Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for a campaign stop, where he stopped off at a steak restaurant, was cheered on by supporters, and answered a few questions from reporters.
Incumbent Democratic President Joe Biden and his predecessor have secured the number of delegates needed to be nominated as the Democratic and Republican nominees, respectively, making it all but certain they will face off on November 5 in a rematch of the 2020 presidential election.
Biden, 81, is running against Vice President Kamala Harris, who, like Biden, is struggling in the polls. Trump, 78, has sparked months of speculation about who he might choose as his running mate.
Before his visit to Philadelphia, Trump spoke to a gathering of politically influential evangelical Christians in Washington, D.C., urging people to vote.
Biden, meanwhile, was spending the weekend at Camp David near Washington preparing for a televised debate with Trump scheduled for Thursday.
Trump's nomination won't be formally announced until the Republican convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in July. Democrats are scheduled to formally select their nominee in Chicago in August.
