In an op-ed published Saturday, The Philadelphia Inquirer's editorial board wrote that one candidate should drop out of the 2024 presidential race — and it's not President Biden. “The only person who should drop out of the race is Donald Trump,” the paper's editorial board argued, adding, “Trump's supporters say they love him because he says whatever he thinks, but he mostly just spews raw filth.”
“Trump is constantly destroying the country to advance himself,” the editorial board added. “There is no shining city on a hill. There is only sadness in America.”
At the heart of its position is the more than 30,000 lies Trump has told during his time in office, including at least 30 more in Thursday's debate alone, which it said was “a reminder of what another four years of Trump will look like: more lies, more grievances, more narcissism and more hatred.”
The committee added that Trump's first term was notable for several reasons, including the amount of time he spent on Twitter and at his properties (he is believed to have played more than 200 rounds of golf), as well as a number of unfulfilled campaign promises, such as building a wall on the Mexican border.
“Mr. Trump packed the judiciary with a largely white, male cohort of judges, including several deemed unqualified by the American Bar Association. He fired and resigned a record number of Cabinet members. His White House was in constant turmoil and infighting,” the commission wrote.
Some of the low points of Trump's presidency include his son-in-law's $2 billion deal with the Saudi Arabian government, his own impeachment, and his mishandling of the coronavirus pandemic. He was recently convicted of 34 counts of fraud in New York and faces three additional federal charges (including for his role in an attempted subversion of the government he ostensibly wants to lead).
With all this in mind, the committee is wondering: Why was he allowed on the debate stage in the first place?
The editorial concluded that President Biden may not have performed as well as many expected in Thursday's debate, but said, “Biden believes in what's best for America. He has rebuilt relationships with allies around the world and stood up to adversaries like Russia and China. Only one person in the debate was unfit to run for president. The sooner Trump is off the stage, the better for the country.”
