Virginia Sen. Mark Warner is reportedly trying to bring together a group of Democratic senators to meet with President Joe Biden and urge him to drop out of the presidential race.
The Washington Post first reported that Warner told fellow lawmakers he no longer believed the president could successfully run the campaign after last week's disastrous debate performance.
Warner spokeswoman Rachel Cohen would neither confirm nor deny Warner's plans.
“Like many in Washington and across the country, Senator Warner believes this is a critical time in the presidential campaign and has made that clear to the White House,” she said in a statement to The Washington Post.
Warner, a moderate Democrat, has a history of working with other senators to form groups to tackle major issues.
The future of Biden's campaign is a big question for congressional Democrats.
Some House Democrats have publicly called for the president to step down, and many others remain concerned that he could be a drag on congressional elections.
Democrats are trying to defend tough races in the U.S. Senate, where they hold a majority by just two votes.
Wisconsin Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin, who is in a tough fight for reelection, did not accompany the president to a campaign event in Madison, Wisconsin, on Friday.
Her campaign argued that she had previously been scheduled to appear at events elsewhere in the state.
