During a conference call convened by House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Meeks expressed dismay at reports that some of his Democratic colleagues had suggested Biden should withdraw.
“I think that was a big mistake and I don't like the fact that that meeting was leaked because what Leader Jeffries is trying to do is bring us all together and listen to every Democrat in the House and make everyone's voices heard,” he said.
Meeks said Biden “performed horribly in the debate” but that he thinks the president will make up for it in upcoming press conferences soon.
“I'm told he's going to hold a number of press conferences,” he said, “where he'll meet with the general media, answer any questions clearly, and lay out what he's done and what he's going to do in the next administration.”
Meeks said he had not been in contact with Biden recently but accompanied the president on his visit to Normandy last month, where he said Biden delivered a “great speech” to mark the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings.
“The president has led and he will continue to lead. The leadership he has shown has made the world, the democratic world, closer together and made us all safer than we would have been if we had gone it alone,” he said.
