Simon Wong Kao, chairman of the Hong Kong Food & Beverage Federation, complained that he was treated rudely while dining with friends at a restaurant in Central.
This comes after Hong Kongers tended to travel north for the holidays, causing sales to fall for many local restaurants.
Wong said on a radio show on Wednesday that he confronted the manager for about 10 minutes and criticised the restaurant's service.
Wong noted that even though there were few customers that night, service was slow, with food taking 15 minutes to be served.
“A chicken dish went missing for 45 minutes, but the waiter said it had been served to another table by mistake,” Mr Wong said.
After waiting another 10 minutes with no response, Wong went to the counter and said he wanted to cancel his order.
When the manager then approached Mr Wong with the bill without being called, Mr Wong became dissatisfied and lectured the manager for about 10 minutes.
He said Hong Kong's food and beverage industry was highly competitive and such attitudes were unacceptable at a time when Hong Kong people travelled to the north for consumption.
Wong added that he later received a call from a senior manager apologising and offering him a free meal, but he declined.
