Celebrities took to social media to share their joy after Ollie Watkins' 90th minute goal gave England a 2-1 win over the Netherlands and sent them dramatically into the Euro 2024 final, where they will face Spain on Sunday.
Dortmund started hot, Xavi Simons beating a ball-holding Declan Rice with a superb long-range shot, but England fought back and Harry Kane was fouled by Denzel Dumfries just inside the penalty area. With extra time approaching, Kane's replacement Watkins smashed in from a tight angle to send Southgate's side into Sunday's final.
Former England captain David Beckham shared his praise for the Three Lions, writing on his Instagram Story: “Wow England team,” with the hugely popular midfielder giving a special shout-out to Watkins, who scored England's winner just minutes after coming on to the pitch.
“That's why they call us a team,” Beckham said. “It's a great moment. Well done, Ollie.”
Television actor Ross Kemp is known for his role as Grant Mitchell. EastEndersshared footage of his enthusiastic celebration of Watkins' goal, leaving fans in laughter. “Oh Ollie Watkins, you did it,” he shouted into the camera. “I knew that change was going to work. Gareth Southgate, genius, genius, genius,” he added.
Britain's new Prime Minister Keir Starmer also revealed that he had been watching Harry Kane's penalty during a break from his first meeting with US President Joe Biden at the White House. “Picked the perfect time to sneak out of a NATO meeting to check the score,” Starmer wrote on Instagram alongside a video of himself watching the match.
He later added of the final score: “Great game, England. Great win. On to Berlin!”
Prince William, who made headlines last week for his theatrical reaction to England's penalty shootout win against Switzerland in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals, shared his assessment of England's run to the final on the Instagram account he shares with Kate.
“How beautiful, Ollie! Congratulations England! #EURO2024 Finalists W,” Prince Charles congratulated him.
Meanwhile, presenter Piers Morgan spoke about the growing discontent among fans towards England manager Gareth Southgate ahead of the win.
“I'm delighted for Southgate,” he wrote. “We all doubted him during this tournament but he has led us to another final and I think we will win on Sunday.”
He added: “A great win. Great goals. Great performance. Great management. Congratulations to England, especially Ollie Watkins and Gareth Southgate.”
“One game left until immortality, everyone, go home with a win.”
