ARLINGTON — When Rob Bentley first entered the MLB Moments contest, he never expected he'd win the experience of being on the same team as two of his favorite celebrities, Pedro Martinez and Jennie Finch.
But that's exactly what happened: He had a front row seat to watch the MLB Hall of Famer and softball legend play in the 2024 All-Star Celebrity Softball Game.
“It's so much fun and amazing to experience the beautiful facility and I couldn't be happier,” Bentley said. “It's a fantastic, once in a lifetime opportunity.”
Before heading to Globe Life Field for Saturday night's game, the Cave Creek, Arizona native attended a welcome reception at the nearby Loews Hotel along with Emmy Award-winner and comedian Tiffany Haddish, University of Colorado football coach and former MLB player Deion Sanders and Grammy Award-winning artist Myke Towers.
Bentley had one of the best seats in the venue and witnessed an exciting match full of antics and near-upsets.
Frontera Tech fires long balls across the border
Before stepping onto the field, Grammy Award-winning producer Frontera Tech announced that he would hit three home runs during the game.
He missed all three, but he did hit one. In his first at-bat of the night, he hit a pitch that dropped inside and went over the outfield fence for his first (and only) home run of the night. He gave his American League team an immediate lead, but it wouldn't last.
Comedian The Kid Mero was hit by a pitch from Martinez while calling for support from his team, and the two men scuffled, but the National League fans, watching from the dugout, did not clear their benches.
Melo tried his best to fight off Martinez, but quickly ended up grabbing the former major leaguer's leg, eliciting laughs from everyone in the stadium.
Continuation in the park
The National League team wasn't going to give up easily. Reality TV star West Wilson hit a ball into the gap in left field. He used his speed to get around the bases and hit the first inside-the-park home run of the inning. Shortly thereafter, radio and TV personality and eventual MVP of the game, Bobby Bones, came to bat and hit his second inside-the-park home run down the middle of the outfield.
Bones hit a home run and a triple to extend the lead, then struck out the batters quickly on the mound and kept the two National League starters in the lineup on defense, putting up a performance worthy of the MVP award.
“Bobby Bones on the mound definitely deserves to be MVP,” Finch said. “He shut us down. I think that's the first time we've ever had a game where we barely got a hit. I think we only got two hits, which is unheard of. So he definitely did his job on the mound.”
During the match, the host of “The Bobby Bones Show” scraped his knee, but after the match, bloodied and with sweat streaming down his face, Bones proudly held the MVP belt and enjoyed some celebrity company.
“It was awesome. It was a lot of fun,” he said. “I won the belt, but I just wanted to play. I didn't want to be the MVP, but it was awesome.”
Owens declares the yard… and then surpasses it
Before the game, Pro Football Hall of Famer Terrell Owens, who said he played a little bit of every sport growing up, including softball, said he planned to hit a home run.
“I'm going to try,” Owens said. “That's the goal. My No. 1 goal is to win, but I'll try to hit a home run if I can.”
At age 50, Owens was able to showcase his athletic ability and hit a softball on a major league field. He helped a National League team score six runs in the fourth inning.
Despite being behind for most of the game, the American League tried their best to come back, scoring eight runs in the fifth and final inning, but it wasn't enough to secure the victory.
“I'm really proud of my team,” Finch said. “It was a tough loss, but seeing the fight and seeing how hard we worked. [eight] We were able to score at the end and finish the game on a good note. At least we fought and won.”
