Former President Donald Trump survived an apparent assassination attempt at a campaign rally on Saturday, further strengthening his chances of winning the 2024 presidential election.
On Saturday, Trump was involved in a shooting in Pennsylvania, a horrific and tragic incident that left at least one spectator dead and others injured.
Trump, bleeding from his right ear, fell to the ground and was helped to his feet by Secret Service agents, who pumped his fist defiantly as his supporters cheered, after which the Secret Service told news outlets shortly thereafter that Trump was OK and had been taken to a hospital.
Officials said the shooting was being investigated as an attempted assassination of the former president.
With Trump in good health and in good condition after the shooting, the conversation quickly shifted to how the assassination attempt will affect the 2024 presidential election.
After predictions for the outcome of the 2024 presidential election shifted dramatically between Saturday night and Sunday morning, we now have our answer.
Donald Trump could become president after shooting
Former President Donald Trump has an overwhelmingly high chance of winning the 2024 election at -400, and a 64.94% chance of winning the November election. Before Saturday's shooting, Trump's odds of winning were at -225, or 57.24%.
Trump's chances of winning -400 would be the highest in a U.S. presidential election since Trump himself was given odds of winning of more than -500 on the eve of the 2020 presidential election four years ago. It would also be the first time that a candidate in the 2024 election will have a chance of winning above 60%.
Current President Joe Biden is back at the second-highest odds to win the election at +500, with a 13.53% chance of reelection. There is a big gap between Trump's odds of -400 and Biden's odds of +500.
Biden was at +550 before Saturday's shooting of President Trump, behind only Kamala Harris at +450. Harris is now at +800 following Saturday's incredible shooting.
Harris was at +325 as of Friday night, but her odds had risen to +450 just hours before Trump was shot on Saturday night. Similarly, Joe Biden was at +550 as of Saturday morning.
Keep in mind that election odds provide a complementary perspective to national polls as an election forecasting tool to predict who will receive the 270 electoral votes needed to secure the right to the Electoral College and to avoid the presidential election being decided by the House of Representatives if no candidate receives the required electoral votes.
President Trump released a statement about the shooting on Saturday night.
Biden's chances of winning the presidential election have been steadily declining since the first presidential debate in late June. They rose from a low of +125 before the debate to +425 immediately after the debate. However, Biden remains the favorite among Democrats.
Vice President Kamala Harris became the front-runner for the Democratic nomination on Wednesday, July 3. Biden briefly regained momentum when he affirmed in an interview a few days ago that he was staying in the race, but Harris took the lead over Biden again on Thursday night, minutes before the president's press conference. Biden was at +400 before the press conference, but has since risen to +450, then +550, and is currently at +500.
Trump only rose to -200 after the first presidential debate, when his odds of winning the 2024 presidential election were -150. And just a week before the first debate, his odds of winning the election were -137.
Add it all up, and in less than a month, Trump's odds of winning the 2024 presidential election have gone from -137 to -400.
This is a developing story.
