HATBORO, Pa. — A Montgomery County bakery is conducting its own polling for a fourth consecutive presidential election.
It's not very scientific, but it's sweet: It's called the Election Cookie Contest.
Rochelle's Bakery in Hatboro, Montgomery County, sold about 40,000 cookies during the 2020 election.
The bakery has been hosting the contest since the 2012 presidential election.
“We're doing it to generate business, bring people to town and keep our staff employed. Summer is typically a slow time so we're preparing these cookies now to keep our staff employed,” said Kathleen Rochelle, whose husband's family started the bakery in 1942.
Rochelle says the contest started as a fun way to sell cookies during the off-season.
But thanks to the publicity, her bakery is now attracting new customers from all over the country.
“We had someone come in from Arizona yesterday and bought four dozen. The most recognizable face of 2020 was Eric Trump coming into our bakery, buying two dozen and standing in line to hand them out,” Rockel said.
In four days, Rochelle's sold 360 Trump cookies to just 11 Biden cookies. Kathleen said there was some backlash.
“We get negative reviews online and people call us and say nasty things,” Rochelle said.
After the assassination attempt that took place in our state last weekend, Rochelle feels fortunate that contests like this can still take place.
“There's still laughter in the world, there's still positive places to go, there's still local bakeries,” Rockel said with a smile.
Whether you're a Trump supporter or a Biden supporter, it's all just eggs, butter and sugar at the end of the day.
“We all need to come together as a country,” said Quakertown customer Nichloe Underkoffler. “Even though we have different views and opinions, it still comes down to the same cookie.”
The cookies will be available for sale during both tournaments and daily after September 5th.
