For those unfamiliar, apres ski (which literally translates to “after ski”) is the “I've just got off the slopes and now I'm at a luxury ski lodge sipping a hot drink by the fire” aesthetic. The term apres ski was popularized in the 1950s when commercial skiing became popular, and many of the following celebrities helped popularize it: Today, apres ski has moved away from skiing and has become a style blueprint in itself, with or without the slopes.
Below are 32 iconic photos of celebrities enjoying après ski.
Kevin Costner
Very similar to the character he played horizon or Yellowstone (or Dances with Wolves, By the way, Kevin Costner is seen wearing a cowboy hat and matching cowboy boots in Aspen, Colorado, a popular ski destination, so if you like western style, let this inspire you.
Lil Jon and Adrian Grenier
This photo makes me happy: Lil Jon and Adrien Grenier look a little chilly, but still a ton of fun, posing together in graphic snow jackets. It was taken at French Connection on the Slopes in 2008, and these two celebs look like they're ready to hit the slopes. (Ditch the goggles and swap your boots for slippers for this après-ski fun.)
Stephen Colbert
This is the best “Dad Style, Snow Edition” for me. What a cool way to do it! Stephen Colbert is sporty. and A hilarious performance at the 2007 HBO US Comedy Arts Festival (USCAF) Celebrity Ski and Snowboard Race. Honestly, I wish I was there. Also, this court is surprisingly fun.
Rebel Wilson
You probably won't be surprised, but this was at the celeb event Operation Smile's 10th Annual Park City Ski Challenge, where Rebel Wilson and her partner Ramona Aguruma looked super stylish. While we love Aguruma's red boots, we were smitten with Wilson's multicolored peplum jacket.
Joe Jonas
Joe Jonas has been incredibly consistent in style in 2016, sporting not one, but three different looks. Here, at the Sundance Film Festival's NYLON + Dream Hotels après-ski event (sounds like it!), Jonas rocks a cozy, casual look.
Sophia Umansky and Kyle Richards
Sophia Umansky and Kyle Richards show off their après-ski looks on their reality TV show. The cowboy hats are hilarious, but the warm puffer coats (Richards's is Prada), sensible snow boots, and thick gloves are perfect for a post-ski stroll outside before dinner.
Goldie Hawn
I can't help it. I love these pants. They may be part of a matching set, but Goldie Hawn's decision to wear them to Aspen was… just Puffer pants and boots look great with a lightweight sweater on top, but if you want to replicate this look, you might want to throw on a jacket.
Brooke Burke
Brooke Burke looks radiant in silver during Operation Smile's 7th Annual Park City Ski Challenge 2018. Seriously, there's very little you need to do for this après-ski: just swap your boots for equally colorful sneakers and your jacket for a heavy cardigan or poncho.
Hailey Bieber
We love these moon boots worn by Hailey Bieber (walking with friends in Aspen in 2022). The YSL handbag, leather leggings, and big boxy jacket with oversized shoulder pads are the perfect low-risk pieces to keep you warm and looking chic. But we want to know more about that lime green coat.
Matt Iseman, Mia Swier, Darren Criss
Here, Matt Eisman ( American Ninja Warrior), actor Darren Criss and his wife, writer-producer Mia Swier, showed off a very colorful look at Operation Smile's 7th Annual Park City Ski Challenge, including this rainbow ski suit one-piece that you'll want in your closet ASAP.
Irina Shayk
Irina Shayk showed off easy, cold-weather style in this asymmetrical button-up cape jacket while attending the 2016 Audi Hahnenkamm Race Weekend. With a few tweaks (we'd definitely swap out the heeled boots for flat ones), it's perfect.
Gwyneth Paltrow
Gwyneth Paltrow opted for a pure white coat and matching turtleneck sweater while attending the 2016 Audi Hahnenkamm Race Weekend. Her leather leggings and contrasting cap-toe snow boots were ultra chic and warm without being bulky.
Clint Eastwood
Clint Eastwood looks like he's enjoying a nice post-race drink while taking part in the Benson & Hedges Celebrity Ski Race in 1971. The fact that he's wearing a lightweight knit turtleneck and black trousers is a fun reminder that ski wear back in the day was fancier (and less practical) than it is today.
Queen Letizia of Spain, Princess Leonor of Spain, Princess Sofia of Spain, King Felipe VI of Spain
Queen Letizia looks stylish as always while on a ski trip with her family in Jaca, Spain in 2017. Her and King Felipe's all-black outfits are, of course, classic and simple, but we love the vibrant colors in Princess Leonor and Princess Sofia's outfits. And the matching helmets are awesome.
Robert Redford
Robert Redford looks incredibly focused as he balances on his skis (this is Sundance Ski Resort in Sundance, Utah, 1977). Dressed in light black jeans, a classic '70s winter jacket and a puffy hat, he's not only weather-appropriate but also incredibly dapper.
Daniel Craig and Lea Seydoux
Amazing… the views aren't bad either! (Sorry.) Not surprising, as Daniel Craig and Lea Seydoux are here for the photocall for the James Bond movie. Specterbut I can't think of a better après-ski outfit. Seydoux's cropped patterned coat and warm hat are top notch.
Elsa Schiaparelli
A 1936 photo of Italian fashion designer (and founder of her eponymous label) Elsa Schiaparelli (proof that après-ski has been with us for a long time, even before the term existed). A lightweight cropped jacket and trousers that tuck into your ski boots are perfect for both on and off the slopes.
Princess Mary of Denmark and Princess Josephine
Queen Mary of Denmark and her daughter enjoyed their annual ski trip to Verbier, Switzerland in 2015. Princess Josephine looks adorable in her bright red sled, and Queen Mary's boots are perfect for both the sledding and the celebration afterwards.
Rihanna
It's likely that Rihanna never went skiing in this outfit (although I would have been so happy if she had), but still, this outfit is perfect for après skiing, with the oversized white coat adding warmth and structure, and the hoodie and boots adding casual, off-duty style.
Natalie Wood
The late Natalie Wood is at the 1971 Benson & Hedges Celebrity Ski Race in Bear Valley, California, and this photo is so sweet. Wood took a break from acting in the '70s, but she still attended public events, obviously. I think these sunglasses would be perfect for skiing or after, as would the leggings.
Brad Pitt
With Brad Pitt Dallas Co-star Shalane McCall (who the pair were rumored to be dating) is seen having fun at Mountain High Ski Resort in Wrightwood, California. Though she's clearly got her ski boots and equipment, her t-shirt, sweater, and jeans look more appropriate for end-of-day drinks at the chalet.
Johnny Hallyday and Sylvie Vartan
French singer Johnny Hallyday and Sylvie Vartan are on a ski trip circa 1970. Vartan's purple snowsuit and fur balaclava are super stylish, as are her teddy bear and shearling gloves. And we love his flared trousers. Old-school après-ski style at its finest.
Mariah Carey
Mariah Carey always has flashy style in the best way, and her après-ski look is no exception. She's leaving a hotel in Aspen, Colorado in 2023 wearing a poncho (think Burberry) that matches perfectly with her earmuffs. Keeping the rest of her outfit simple and black helps make the outfit seem (slightly) carefree.
Cheryl Tiegs
Cheryl Tiegs showed off her usual sporty style while attending the John Denver Celebrity Ski Classic at Heavenly Mountain Resort in South Lake Tahoe, California. Tiegs has a laidback, casual vibe to her look, so these striped overalls and turtleneck were the perfect layering piece.
Kate Middleton
Kate Middleton's outfit was compared to that of Princess Diana (whose outfit also appears on this list), who famously went on a ski trip with then-Prince Charles. Kate was actually with Prince William at an event hosted by the Norwegian Ski Federation in 2018. Her red and white jacket recalls some of the colors of the Norwegian flag, making her look both wintery and stylish.
Gina Lollobrigida
Here, Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida is in a 1950s ski lodge. She looked amazing in her cable-knit sweater, dark trousers, scarf around her waist, and super fluffy gloves – perfect for an evening of ski lodge fun for anyone.
Princess Maxima and Princess Laurentien
The Dutch Royal Family is here for their annual Austrian ski holiday and I love both Princess Maxima and Princess Laurentien's outfits – the red is bold and eye-catching without being overly padded, but I actually prefer the black coat and contrasting white trousers a little better.
Brigitte Bardot
Brigitte Bardot in casual après-ski attire? Needless to say! She's vacationing at the ski resort of Méribel, France, wearing cute plaid pants and pointy black boots. But what I love most is that she might be sporting a classic beehive under that chunky hat.
Cher
Cher is on vacation with her children (not pictured) in Aspen, Colorado in 1977, wearing a bandana over her long, signature hair and a colorful purple ski jumpsuit with big, fluffy black boots that matched her hair. So Cher.
Sophia Loren
At Cortina d'Ampezzo in 1956, Sophia Loren looked characteristically chic (although we suspect she had cold feet). The silk trousers and cable-knit sweater with matching hood were a lovely way to stay warm, but without sacrificing her signature style.
Princess Diana
Princess Diana was a fashion icon throughout her time as a royal, and she also took ski trips. Here, at the start of a ski holiday in Vaduz, Liechtenstein, in 1984, she is wearing a stunning ruby ski suit. I love the matching red hat that Prince Charles wore at the time.
Grace Kelly
When it comes to style, it's hard to beat Grace Kelly, pictured here with her two children, Prince Albert II and Caroline, in Gstaad, Switzerland in 1962. The cable-knit turtleneck, black trousers tucked into practical-yet-chic boots, and fluffy knit hat suited her perfectly.
