There are currently more than 325 British Team athletes in Paris who will represent Great Britain at the 2024 Olympic Games.
But while these sports stars are sure to inspire the next generation of athletes, they're also (unintentionally) making waves in the fashion industry.
In recent weeks, celebrities and social media stars have been paying tribute to the Great Britain team by wearing Union Jack-inspired clothing.
Earlier this month, singer Doja Cat performed at Wireless Festival in Finsbury Park wearing a custom Union Jack corset.
The 28-year-old American rapper teamed the spray-painted top with lacy black underwear, fishnet stockings and a silver chain belt.
Meanwhile, singer Rachel Cinoulili took a similar approach when she performed at Glastonbury last month.
The 25-year-old musician opted for a grunge, 1990s-inspired outfit for the stage: a blue tie-dye T-shirt, a ripped denim midi skirt and a halter top emblazoned with the British flag.
The Union Jack top also has a spray paint effect and is decorated with rhinestones and star studs.
Last month, TikTok star Rachel, who boasts 176,000 followers, also shared a video of herself styling a pair of Union Jack skinny jeans.
Vintage acid-wash jeans feature a flag on one side and are also embellished with rhinestones.
The influencer paired her grunge jeans with a grey tank top, a Vivienne Westwood bag and a black off-the-shoulder top.
“We need this!” one fan gushed in the comments section.
Another added: “Bada*s denim!”
What's more, the high street is also starting to notice a renewed interest in Union Jack fashion.
Urban Outfitters is currently selling the French Connection Union Jack T-shirt, which features the 2000s-era FCUK branding printed on it.
Meanwhile, ASOS is also selling a £20 JJXX t-shirt embroidered with the Union Jack and “GB 24” in honour of the Olympics.
In addition to this, GAP is also bringing back its unisex Union Jack hoodie from the 2000s, retailing for £30.
Geri Halliwell famously turned the Union Jack into a fashion icon when she wore the iconic flag mini dress to the 1997 Brit Awards.
In a 2020 interview with Vogue, the singer revealed that she wanted to jazz up a plain black Gucci dress and came up with the patriotic design.
Referring to Tom Ford and his work with the brand at the time, she added: “I looked at it and I thought it didn't make much sense.”
“I've always tried to put my finger in the wind and feel what's going on. If I can feel it, you can feel it and we'll connect. So I thought, [it’s] Why don't the British fly the British flag?
Detailing how she ended up altering the dress, she added: “I don't know if this is true or not, but you're not supposed to cut up the flag, so I found a tea towel. My sister did it. She's a better sewer than me.”
However, after a stylist told her that the outfit could be considered “racist” because it was reminiscent of the National Front, she decided to add a peace sign to the outfit.
“I was like, 'Well, fuck it. We celebrate all cultures,'” she explained, “so I got the peace sign tattooed on my back.”
“And then during the actual performance, we turned our backs to the audience and you could see the peace signs… I think we felt empowered by each other, and that's what this group is about.”
She spoke passionately about the impact the outfit had on society at the time, adding: “I woke up the next morning and pictures of me in that dress were on the front page of every newspaper.”
“That dress really became a symbol of girl power.”
Geri Halliwell's Union Jack dress has been recreated countless times over the past 27 years, including for Dua Lipa's nomination at the 2021 Brit Awards.
The 28-year-old singer delighted fans at the ceremony held at London's O2 Arena in a striking outfit that featured a Union Jack wrap skirt and a daring thong underneath, performing a medley of her biggest hits.
The airborne hitmaker's outfit choice was reminiscent of Geri Horner's much talked about patriotic mini dress which she wore while performing at the same awards ceremony.
