NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Early voting is still open, but turnout in the Louisiana presidential primary is lower than in past presidential election years.
Voter turnout in the Parish of Orleans is down 50%.
“In 2020, the number of early voters was just about 20,000, and this year it's 10,000. So we're down by less than half, and that's what everyone is concerned about,” the Parish of Orleans court said. said Secretary Darren Lombardo.
People are worried even though President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are already the nominees of their respective parties. Some voters are concerned that low early voting turnout could predict the outcome in November.
“It's important to vote because if you don't vote, you don't have a voice. So I always exercise my right to vote and make sure my kids do the same,” Brenda Wheeler said.
As of March 1, there are approximately 3 million registered voters in Louisiana. Lombard hopes voters do their research and arrive at the polls confident in their choice.
“There may be some level of fatigue among voters about what's going on nationally and what happened four years ago. That may be affecting their motivation in this election. Yes. Hopefully, people will go vote on Election Day,” Lombard said.
The number one thing voters should remember this weekend and on Election Day is to bring their ID. Please note that you are still eligible to vote even if you are in line past the closing time.
