Have you ever felt the underlying fear that everyone is watching you? Psychologists call this the “spotlight effect.” This is a psychological phenomenon that explains why people tend to believe they are getting more attention than they actually are. Nowhere is this more evident than in movies, and more recently in the influencer/content creator industry, where being in the spotlight is commonplace.

By nature, humans tend to seek external validation, whether famous or anonymous. However, this desire for approval from someone other than yourself can be unpredictable and may not be sustainable. This explains why celebrities who dominate the big screen and Instagram are naturally susceptible to mood and self-esteem issues. Mistakes and perceived flaws always attract attention and can therefore have a greater impact. This makes them more susceptible to stress caused by factors beyond their control.
For most people, regardless of their height, common strategies for dealing with stress include an “avoidance” approach rather than an “accept and process” approach. Coupled with the relentless glare of being in the spotlight, a heightened sense of vulnerability can lead to excessive tension and anxiety, and the person may turn to substances such as drink or drugs as a means of escape. Additionally, long working hours leave little time for self-care and treatment. When it's hard to find solutions, what can public figures do to focus on their health? Here are some guidelines.
- Beware of genetic connections. Many mental health problems have a genetic predisposition. Understanding these genetic risk factors allows for early detection, customized treatment programs, and implementation of preventive measures. This knowledge, combined with other diagnostic tools and treatment approaches, can help prevent mental health problems from becoming chronic.
- Stay healthy: For people constantly exposed to bright light, prioritizing regular exercise, getting enough sleep, and practicing mindfulness can provide the strength needed to manage stress and control overwhelming emotions and situations. It gives you strength and mental strength.
- Find ways to self-validate. This will help you break the habit of seeking external validation like most celebrities. Finding a hobby, passion, or cause to contribute to gives celebrities another purpose to devote their energy to, and a distraction from constantly seeking approval or dealing with trolls.
- Speak up: More and more celebrities and public figures are speaking out about mental health issues. Sharing personal experiences helps gather support, accept the fact that humans are inherently flawed, removes the stigma attached to the issue, and generally promotes awareness about mental health. Helpful.
Mental health issues do not discriminate. That being said, public figures are more susceptible to constant attention from the media and fans. In such scenarios, practices such as setting aside time for self-care, setting aside time for other interests, and speaking up about your struggles can help maintain a balanced life. You will find it very helpful to do so.
