West Liberty, West Virginia, April 5, 2024 — West Liberty University officially named Dr. Tim Borchers as president Friday afternoon during a ceremony at West Liberty University's Academic, Sports, and Recreation Complex (ASRC).
The theme of the inauguration ceremony was “The Power of Will.” In his inaugural address, Dr. Borchers explained that the concept of aspiration is being favored by students as part of the university's new marketing campaign.
“I think the theme of aspiration and hope captures this moment in West Liberty today,” Dr. Borchers said in his speech.
In his talk, Dr. Borchers focused on the role of universities in providing access and opportunity, economic opportunity, and experiential learning.
“Providing an affordable education is a top priority for the university and we have worked hard to keep costs low relative to the experience our students receive,” he said. “We will partner with community businesses to develop, promote and support internships, apprenticeships and entry-level career opportunities for students in our community.”
Borchers also announced several new initiatives, including an employee leadership development program starting in fall 2024. He also announced the creation of the West Liberty Foundation and the Aspire Fund to support experiential learning for students.
Board Secretary Tom Selborn officiated the ceremony. Board Chairman David McKinley officially appointed Borchers as Chairman.
Senator Shelley Moore Capito gave a video welcome address, and Roseann Ferro and Mary Jo Guidi of Senator Joe Manchin's office spoke on behalf of Senator Manchin.
Governor James Justice released a statement declaring, “I commend the entire WLU community for their unwavering support and commitment to a nurturing and environment where students can thrive and excel.”
The week-long celebration began on Thursday, April 4, with a campus open house, the opening of the Nutting Gallery art exhibit, the Hughes lecture series, and the opening performance of “Puff” by the Hilltop Players. .
The event will continue for the next five days, including a 5K run/walk on Saturday, a free organ concert at the Interfaith Chapel on Sunday at 3pm, a solar eclipse viewing event on Monday, and an alumni event on Tuesday. Dr. Borchers previously served as vice president for academic affairs at Peru State University and dean and faculty member at Minnesota State University-Moorhead College. He became West Liberty's president on July 1, 2023.
