For me, that elegant layered ice cream cake was the epitome of luxury growing up. Every year, I requested it as my birthday cake and was so thankful to my mom for giving me a special treat every year.
I put it in the “things that made you rich” category…along with having a fridge with an ice dispenser and Foxtel.
I didn't know the cost was so low.
But the velvety texture of the ice cream, perfectly placed on a metal tray and layered with chocolate flakes, felt like a true indulgence. And I became happy in my delusion.
Yes, we know now that it's just a glorified ice cream cake, but back then it was the ultimate symbol of sophistication.
I hadn't thought about it in years, and even thought it was discontinued, until I saw a post about it this week and learned that Vienetta's fan base is still very much alive. .
Yes, apparently, people still buy it, just like they did in the 90s and 1990s. No, there was no doubt that it was still a “luxury” brand.

“It was delicious”
Mum Rachel Hallett shared on the Mums Who Facebook page that she recently took a trip down memory lane and treated herself to the iconic dessert.
“According to my 8-year-old Rachel, today is the day I officially 'made it.'
“I always thought vienetta was the ultimate 'rich' food, and maybe someday I'll be rich enough too! The day has finally come. ”
She added: “I think it cost her $6, which I think is very reasonable for a family-sized dessert!
“It was delicious!”
This dessert is currently on special sale at Coles, selling for $6 instead of the usual $8.

“Lazy Birthday Cake”
In the comments, people gathered to share their memories with Rachel.
“I laughed so hard because this was such a special treat for us growing up and at the time we thought it was incredibly expensive and extravagant. Even if it wasn’t, it still retains that luxury for me,” one follower said.
Another user added: “This would only be available at Gran's house on special occasions. I felt the same way when I bought it at the store. It felt like I had 'made it.' I also felt that I had finally become an adult. ”
And a third said: “I love Vienetta and so do my little ones!!!” The crunchy texture of the chocolate is very stimulating. If you look, if you buy a magnum, it's for one person and she's 6-7 dollars. If you buy the whole Vienetta, you get up to 5 servings for the same amount. I support you! good choice! “
“This was released for special birthdays when I was a kid, and I was so excited when I saw it in the supermarket a few years ago that I had to buy it. I highly recommend it for your birthday.” But when I was growing up, we weren't wealthy, but it certainly felt like a luxury to eat this.”
“Oh, I want it, I didn't know it was still available,” said another.
Then this mother said: I am known to be very lazy and sometimes use these as birthday cakes. ”
However, other ice cream lovers took to the comments page complaining about the effect of shrinkflation on the product.
“It's smaller than I remember!” one lamented.
“I bought it a few months ago and now it's much smaller and doesn't taste as good at all. I'm so disappointed,” added another.
I think you should go and test it yourself!
