President-elect Kyle McLaughlin and Vice President-elect Dillion Peterson will assume the helm of SGA next semester.
Both candidates won by narrow margins of just over 50%. McLaughlin received 90 votes out of 163 total votes cast, and Peterson received 86 votes out of 162 total votes cast.
Current President Marc Palombo congratulated both men on their victories at the SGA weekly meeting on Monday, April 8, and pledged to do his best to ensure an effective transfer of power.
“I hope to see many of you throughout this month,” Palombo said.
Palombo said he and the executive branch have begun drafting an ordinance that would allow the president and vice president to live on campus free of charge year-round.
Under the current constitution, on-campus housing is provided free of charge during the summer, but not in the fall or spring.
“We were going to live off campus,” Peterson said. “But after we were elected, we decided to live on campus so we could have better governance.”
A total solar eclipse occurred during the meeting, and many senators were absent. When the meeting was convened, only five people were present.
Current Vice President Trevor Fitzsimmons expressed disdain at the low turnout.
“It's a disservice to the student body and a disservice to the organization that everyone wasn't present today,” Fitzsimmons said. “I am extremely disappointed in this matter, and the student body should be as well.”
Mr. Fitzsimmons has often been critical of senators' attendance, often making similar remarks at the beginning of weekly meetings.
Due to lack of attendance, the organization was unable to vote on the Black Diamond Majorette and Step Team Bylaws. The vote will take place during next week's meeting.
Pioneer Community Day, sponsored by SGA, will be held at Village Park on Thursday, April 11th from 1-5 p.m.
The next SGA meeting will be held on April 15th at 3:15pm in UC212. Anyone can join.
