A Federal High Court in Abuja has remanded Mr. Akintoye Akindele, a businessman from the Nigeria Correctional Center in Kuje, FCT, on charges of fraud of $5.6 million.
Justice James Omotosho on Friday remanded Akindele, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO) of Duport Midstream Company Limited, to March 20 when his bail documents will be considered. ordered.
The court granted Akindele bail in the amount of NOK 750 million with two sureties of the same amount on March 1, shortly after he was indicted on charges of fraud worth $5.6 million.
In granting the bail application, Justice Akira Omoto directed Akindele to comply with the conditions by March 8.
Some of the conditions are that the two sureties must have acquired real property within the court's jurisdiction and swear an affidavit of means in court.
Justice Akira Omoto ruled that since the defendant appeared in court from his home, the court will grant him bail at the FCT High Court until March 8, arguing that if the conditions are not met, the defendant will be remanded. New bail will be posted by March 8, 2024.
However, when the case went to trial on Friday, the prosecuting lawyer, Mr Simon Ruff (SAN), tried to make an oral application to have the case transferred from the Federal High Court in Abuja to a court in Lagos, but the court refused. He said: An alleged crime has occurred.
Akindele’s lawyers led by James Onoja (SAN) opposed the oral request by the police. The court did not accept submissions from all parties, emphasizing that the transfer issue is an issue that must be put into writing by the prosecution.
In four charges filed by the Office of the Inspector General of Police, Akindele is accused of misappropriating the sum of $5,636,397.01 and N73,543,763.25 belonging to Summit Oil International Limited.
